A great fire devastates 5,000 hectares in the Greek region of Attica and forces seven populations to evacuate.

The fire that runs through the Attica region of Greece has already devastated 5,000 hectares of forest and forced the evacuation of the inhabitants of seven towns and two monasteries.

The smoke caused by the flames is visible from the Athenian Acropolis , the southern peninsula and the Aegean islands.

The fire started this Wednesday night near a hotel in the Corinthian Gulf, just 90 kilometers from Athens .

The strong wind spread the flames west of the peninsula, towards the Geraneia Mountains.

Residents of the area received alerts on their mobiles to leave their homes and move to the city of Megara.

Three helicopters and 17 planes try to put out the fire with water during the day. In addition, part of the power lines have burned, causing blackouts in the region.

Although the wind has given a slight truce, weather forecasts warn that this Sunday there may be gusts of up to 60 kilometers per hour .
